Love Me Sober

Fresh from a string of European dates on tour with Jack Garratt, Martin Luke Brown has dropped a new track online entitled ‘Love Me Sober’, that reached No 1 on the Hype Machine Twitter Chart.

‘It’s a song about depression if I’m honest.’ MLB confesses. He picks a topic that is commonly explored but seldom done justice, and it wasn’t until a particular gig when he realised it’s importance.

‘I was gigging in Banbury at the time..’ MLB recalls, ‘I was just coming to the end of the song when suddenly this brawny fella who’d been sat right at the front jumped on stage and grabbed me. It was a little awkward (not to mention TERRIFYING) but he soon revealed to me that he was an ex-military officer and had suffered with depression and the song had really hit a nerve with him, he was crying, hanging off my shoulder and everything. It was mad. I love music for that among many other reasons.’

The hippy hearted Leicester boy is fast becoming known for his unique brand of gritty soul and while this track has its tender moments, the BBC Introducing favourite still packs a punch with his killer falsetto, gutsy vocals and honest lyric. With a love for vintage recording techniques, MLB's sound nods to bygone eras with production elements drawn from golden age Hip-hop and Staxx records - something that is particularly evident in recent releases, ‘Scars on Scars’ & ‘Knife Edge’.

Backed by BBC The Beat’s Dean Jackson in the East Midlands, MLB has previously garnered praise and support from the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens. However, with the ambition of creating a ‘dead
honest’ record that comes straight 'from the heart, out the mouth', MLB is often found by a piano or Wurlitzer where he delivers songs reminiscent of past experiences; from growing up and becoming an adult - a theme encapsulated by stand out track ‘Nostalgia’.
