Supported by the likes of SB.TV, Mistajam and Charlie Sloth following a series of independent releases, The Manor – the best thing from Beckenham since Bowie – have dropped the ‘Weak Days, Strong Nights’ EP which is their first under a new deal with Parlophone.
‘Weak Days, Strong Nights’ is a debauched diary of a weekend in the life of The Manor, and all of the highs and lows that follow as a consequence. Opening track ‘Don’t Like Going Places’ celebrates an initial lack of will to go out in the first place (“If I want an adventure I sit in my yard and watch a bit of Game of Thrones”) but subsequently ramp things up displaying their love of London life in ‘The Reducer’.
The fine line between hedonism and excess is explored in ‘We Love It’ (“I’ve been up for days I’ve gone mad..”) and the brooding comedown of ‘Sex, Drugs and On The Dole’. The Manor’s sound flashbacks with a cheeky nod to the Manchester rave scene in ‘Hacienda’.
On first impressions, The Manor are three friends whose music and tales of everyday life – booze, birds and finding the positive in any negative situation – are being embraced by like-minded souls the nation over. Along the way there’s been some classic south-east London style duckin’ and divin’ as the trio – Johnny Dutch, Scotty Stacks and Danny Graft – stand on the cusp of substantially bigger things.
Scratch the surface, however, and you’ll see that there’s much more to them than such a snapshot suggests. Johnny and Danny were schoolmates who later connected with Scotty at college. When the former pair headed to university to study economics, Scotty made a small fortune selling and trading sports hospitality, houses, baked goods and Ralph Lauren.
A riotous set at the O2 Academy Islington saw The Manor’s fans break the venue’s record for their most beer sales in their history. A deal was quickly sealed with Parlophone. Last week The Manor played their biggest sold-out to date at Koko, which they followed by parading a ‘Manor’ soundsystem towards their after show party. It caused chaos down Camden High Street before the police closed down the festivities barely 500 metres later as The Manor’s army responded with a boozy but good-natured chorus of football songs.
