"Snarly-But-Sweet" - NME

"I am currently loving the Silent Type EP by Hannah Lou Clark, especially Kids In Heat. It taps into a lot of music that I like but is also lyrically really interesting and evocative." Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches!

Written and recorded by Hannah Lou Clark whilst living above a Quaker meeting house, this debut EP takes inspiration from the bizarre intensity of the silent worship happening below.

Fond of writers like Charles Bukowski and Billy Childish, Hannah’s lyrics - much like their soundtrack - can be confrontational, and raw, with occasional intent to cause discomfort. “They’re twisted...” she confesses, pausing until the silence becomes awkward, “...pop songs.”

Amidst the endless suburban sprawl of the British home counties, Hannah set up a home studio to record the EP using a combination of digital and analogue technology - a 4 track tape machine and her computer. Hannah explains: “My aim was to capture the sound of the house. Every little detail is picked up, squeezed and distorted, a bit like the lyrics. At the start of ‘My Game’ for instance you can hear my housemate and his girlfriend playing a flute through the wall... It was an oddly meditative space, but it became my private sanctuary. It allowed my thoughts to swirl and the louder ideas to bubble to the surface.”

This EP marks the first public airing of “a sort of cleansing process” after her previous project ‘Foe’ disbanded two years ago. Hannah’s been busy since then: experimenting, writing, re-writing, and building up a stockpile of tunes. She hasn’t been alone. Hannah’s collaborated with many artists and musicians, including Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey) and Debbie Googe (My Bloody Valentine); singer songwriter Ed Harcourt, and up and coming artists Eugene Quell (whose vocals feature on Silent Type). Working with people who she has been fans of since a young age has given her the confidence to drop the nom-de-plume and go out into the world under her own name. This EP is just the start.
