Gideon Bensen
ALL NEW LOW
NEW PROJECT. NEW LABEL. NEW SOUND.
THE FIRST RELEASE FROM HIS DEBUT EP, DUE FEBRUARY 2016 .
Gideon Bensen, until now best known as the guitarist for Sydney group, The Preatures, has surprised fans of that band with a brilliant new solo project to be released through his own label, Puncture Records, through Virgin UK. His debut single, All New Low, premiered last night on Triple J Radio via Richard Kingsmill’s influential “2015” show. Produced by Tony Buchen (Montaigne, Mansionair) alongside Bensen, the single is taken from his forthcoming solo EP, which will follow in February 2016.

Says Bensen, “While on tour with The Preatures, I found myself working on tracks more and more, up at all hours, in transit, in hotel rooms, wherever I could set up. I was obsessed. I felt like I wanted to push myself more. Then, I had some time in Sydney between tours, so I contacted my old friend and producer, Tony Buchen, with some songs and ideas for an 80’s/90s new wave / soul record. I told him, “If I do it I have to go all out. I don’t want to sound like I ever have before.”
While recording All New Low, Bensen was greatly influenced by hip hop and beat making. “It’s a world I had never really explored until now,” he says. “I was inspired by acts like N.W.A, Bomb da Bass, Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus and D’Angelo’s “Black Messiah” and wanted to incorporate that into what I was doing.”
Bensen enlisted the help of friends Megan Washington to perform backing vocals, Jack Moffit (The Preatures) on guitar and Carlos Adura (The Tambourine Girls) on drums. The song was mixed by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, The Faint) and mastered by Leon Zervos (Wu Tang Clan, Beastie Boys).
Gideon Bensen will be playing select live shows in Australia in February, with UK dates expected for later in the year. All New Low is taken from Bensen’s forthcoming EP, which will follow in February 2016.
