Having recently earned the honour of being named as fellow musician Jack Garrett’s #UKRepresents on Beats 1, Martin Luke Brown has launched his new track ‘Knife Edge’ which is now streaming and will be released on October 16th.
The 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist has just completed a handful of headline UK regional shows with his band and enjoyed a busy summer during which he played a succession of major festivals including Reading & Leeds, Y Not, Boardmasters, Dot To Dot, Splendour, Barn On The Farm and Reeperbahn.
After the introductory singles ‘Nostalgia’, ‘Take Out Of Me’ and ‘Scars On Scars’, Martin’s songwriting prowess has continued to evolve with ‘Knife Edge’. Produced by Utters (Drake, Maverick Sabre), the track highlights the young musician’s organically fuelled songwriting, with contemporary production allowing his heady hybrid of soul, Motown-styled pop and bluesy grooves to flourish.
“It's a frustration song really…” says Martin about ‘Knife Edge’. “It’s all about my general frustration with life and how I was taught to live it by a lot of people when growing up.”
The ability of the Internet to launch the careers of upcoming musicians is well documented, but even now it’s surprising to see how everything can change in an instant. When Martin’s session for Dean Jackson’s show The Beat on BBC Radio Nottingham was broadcast on a Saturday, he was overwhelmed with label interest by Monday morning. Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and XFM soon followed with radio support.
Blessed with a voice that’s equally adept at delivering gritty soul as it is with his folk-infused falsetto, Martin’s songwriting represents the pure essence of his classic influences. From Stevie Wonder to Don McLean and The Beatles, Martin Luke Brown admired the unifying qualities of their songs. “There was something much deeper to them than just the music, whether that be a political message or a theme that wasn’t so commonly explored.”
In addition to his summer festival dates, Martin recently headlined a rammed London show at The Lexington, played secret sessions for Sofar Sounds, and has also performed as guest to chart-topping Jess Glynne and, most recently, Jack Garratt.
He’s next set to hit the road for an extended stripped down tour including dates with acoustic duo Seafret throughout November.
