Deap Vally, the Los Angeles duo comprising Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards, return to the fray with Smile More, the first single to be taken from their upcoming second album, due for release later this year. Produced by Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, the single brings the band’s rock ‘n’ roll roots to the forefront and gives a tantalizing glimpse of what fans can expect to hear in the new record.

Deap Vally recently completed major North American tours with Peaches and with Wolfmother during which they aired a number of new songs from the upcoming album live for the first time. The group will head to the UK this summer for a London date at The Lexington on 28th July and to headline a stage at Derbyshires’ Y Not Festival on Friday 29th July. The new album follows Deap Vally’s 2013 debut, Sistrionix, which picked up critical praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, SPIN, NME, The Guardian and more. The album took the band around the world, with festivals from Glastonbury to Austin’s Psych Fest, and with sold out headline shows everywhere from their hometown to London’s Electric Ballroom to Sydney.

Deap Vally teamed up with Nina Ljeti to make the music video for Smile More. Ljeti is a Bosnian-born Canadian filmmaker and musician. Nina has directed music videos for numerous artists including Soko, No Parents, and Golden Daze and her first feature film, Memoria, which she co-wrote and directed, is currently screening. Says Nina, “What I love most about Smile More is that the lyrics and message resonate with people of all backgrounds and walks of life, who are fighting for what they want and believe in, despite social opposition. I wanted to compliment the universality of the track by shooting people around LA who, to me, embody this message. I chose to shoot on the iPhone 6s because of the freedom and accessibility it provides for a candid, doc-style piece.’

Trivia: Julie’s baby makes a cameo. She happened to be on the set and was being watched by the band’s friend Lauren, who also played percussion on Femejism. Nina spontaneously grabbed a few shots of them.

The video was shot around East LA, where Deap Vally mixed Femejism, recorded a lot of their first record Sistrionix, and did some of their very first demos as a band, and Downtown Los Angeles, where they recorded most of Femejism, and had jammed together for the very first time in 2011.
